MY SO-CALLED (LOVE) LIFE: A. L. MICAEL

After falling insanely in love with Michael's The Last Word, I was super excited only days later to find that yet another book had been released. I was going to be on vacation and I couldn't wait to take this baby with me.

I did love it, although it is so similar in story line and also characters as The Last Word that I wished there had been something more to set them apart so they don't glob together in my mind. We had the boy and girl fake relationship that leads to more, and then we had two best girlfriends where one of them is gay...again. I mean seriously it was too much like the first book I loved. Yet, here is the thing. I said I loved the first book so that means I loved this too.

I just hope that the next book of this author's has some characters that I couldn't mistake for being the same ones in this book. Either way, I'll be excited to read whatever comes next!

THE LAST WORD: A. L. MICHAEL

Utterly and completely charming. I adored this from the beginning and I just loved every second of reading this. I always love me some British Chick-Lit and this one delivered. My biggest disappointment? That I cannot seem to be able to buy a physical copy of the book. It seems to only be available as an eBook! How am I supposed to add it to my ever growing British Chick-Lit collection?

IT'S NOT ME IT'S YOU: MHAIRI MCFARLANE

How delightful are the characters in Mhairi McFarlane's books? I can't even tell you. Three books now and I have been delighted by all of her characters. Her writing style in this book is the same as in her previous two. She writes a TON of little asides that go way over my head. However, her characters shine and make me want to read and read and read and then cry when there is no more to read.

HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU: MHAIRI MCFARLANE

Yesterday I was talking with my friend Suzy about this book and I looked on Goodreads to see what I had written about it and I realized I had forgotten to review it! Do you ever do that? I'm sure I do it more than I realize, I read too much.

With this particular book, I think I forgot because I planned on sharing how much I enjoyed it on the blog, and I kept putting it off and I forgot. Well enough about my scatter brain self and now on to why I liked this book.

McFarlane's writing style is pretty specific to her. She likes to make lots of jokes that honestly distract me quite a bit. But I like her stories and honest characters so much I don't mind being a tiny big distracted. If you are a British chick-lit fan (and if you actually read my blog you should try a few if you haven't read any before), then I would read Mhairi's first book You Had Me At Hello and then if you love it then you will probably love this too.

YOU HAD ME AT HELLO: MHAIRI MCFARLANE

First off, I love British Chic-Lit. It is like my favorite thing. I think it should be its own special genre. I am always disappointed at how hard it is to get some of the best Girlie British books in the hands of American gals like me. Fortunately, some books do well enough in the UK, that we finally get to read them easily here. This is one of those books. 

Now, it didn't flow as easily as I usually like. Part of it had to do with all the sassy sideline comments, which were funny. However, they were also quite British and a lot of them went over my head. In fact, sometimes when I would actually get one of the Briticisms in this book (because I do read a lot of British stuff) I would be reminded about how many of them in this book I WASN'T getting. Kind of like reading an old book with a lot of words you don't understand so you just skim over and keep plowing ahead.

Overall though this was adorable. Just my thing. And it goes back and forth in time and I didn't find it annoying like I usually do. The past/present actually worked in the book's favor and moved the plot along nicely. This story consumed me, keeping me from real life, until the last page.

IT FELT LIKE A KISS: SARRA MANNING

So one of my best Christmas presents was from my mom. She snagged me an ARC of our favorite author's new book. Normally I would wait and be patient to read this closer to the release date, but I don't even know the US release date...so who cares right? Instant book gratification never hurt anyone that much.

It Felt Like A Kiss was great. It was a bit slow starting, but I was still enjoying it. The last half was almost impossible to put down. Also, I love love loved having cameos from my two favorite Manning characters Vaughn and Grace as well.

I'm sure you have bought worse books for that price.

After that you will be all caught up on Grace and Vaughn. If you can't wait for more Manning You Don't Have To Say You Love Me is also crazy cheap and available to borrow. These are two of my favorite books of all time people!

Sarra writes some sexy scenes in her books, but they are not glamorized romance novel type scenes. There is always a fair amount of character driven swearing as well. 

She is my favorite author of chick-lit and YA. End of. (That is my favorite British saying ;) )

PAIGE TOON: THE LONGEST HOLIDAY

If you have not yet read a book by Paige Toon and you love fun light reads where you get totally involved in the characters lives...then what are you waiting for? I cannot give enough cheers for Paige Toon where my only complaint with her books is that they end too soon. For those of you in the US, you might find your library has slim pickings for Toon books. However, you will find that on Amazon you can purchase used copies for a steal.

I recently devoured her most recent release, The Longest Holiday and loved it.

DIVING IN, THE ART & COLL SERIES: KATE CANN

I haven't posted in ages, because I haven't read anything worth posting in ages. It has been a real reading slump. I have had these little gems to keep me afloat these last weeks as they arrived in the mail. This was such a great series and I was surprised as I started reading them that they were written in 1999! I would have loved reading about Art & Coll's romance if I had read it then (although of course I still loved it now).

Some reasons you might love it too? You love British teens, you love great well rounded secondary characters, and you love to read a voice that tells it to you straight. 

Kate Cann has also published an eBook that ties up the series and gives Art's side of the story. It is short, but I found I just had to read it and it is a free lend if you are an Amazon Prime member. Search for Art's Story.

ONE PERFECT SUMMER: PAIGE TOON

Paige Toon has done it again, she has delighted me from front cover to back in her newest book. Our MCs are in college for most of this book. It used to be very had to find books with characters of this age, now there is the growing genre of New Adult and you can now find college age characters in abundance. However, so many of those books aren't really very polished and just seem to me to be drawing readers in with scandalous sex scenes. (That is my opinion anyway...) 

Toon's One Perfect Summer isn't like that at all. Since I am always on the hunt for great college reads this book is a perfect little gem of a find for me. It is probably my favorite of her books (and I have read them all now), and it is one amazing story of first love. The book spans almost a decade and it is a wonderfully absorbing journey just like all of this author's books. (Can you tell I am a fan?)

One thing that is consistent in all of Toon's writing is her talk of sex, and great swoony scenes without graphic sex scenes. She always has a little bad language skittered throughout, but never anything distracting. If you haven't ever read one of her books, I obviously highly encourage you to do so.

There is a short story called One Perfect Christmas available on Amazon that adds a bit more to the original book, I bought it even though it took me no time at all to read it. I think it was too much money for what I got, however I love Toon so much, I don't mind throwing $3.99 her way.

MY BEST FRIEND'S GIRL: DOROTHY KOOMSON

I was sucked in to this story by page two. There were several factors in why I related to this story, but mostly I just felt the characters right away. I found this to be beautifully consuming. This is my favorite kind of chick-lit book. It isn't just shallow and silly, it isn't depressing while still being deep and real, it talks about sex without having detailed sex scenes. I find these kinds of books so rarely that I get very excited when I find one.

This was drama in the best way. Not over the top, but still enough out of ordinary life to make it very interesting as a reader. Plus, it is topped off with loveable and real characters.

WHO'S AFRAID OF MR. WOLFE?: HAZEL OSMOND

I really enjoyed this. It was kind of predictable, but then the way it went about it's predictableness (I know that is not word) was a surprise. It is probably not a book you can get at your local library, but it is available on amazon for way cheap.

A few steamy scenes and mild language. Overall a light and enjoyable read without being silly.

JOHNNY BE GOOD & BABY BE MINE BY PAIGE TOON

I have been going through a real British chick-lit phase these days. I don't know what it is about them, but I can't seem to get enough. I recently read and reviewed and LOVED Paige Toon's Chasing Daisy. I couldn't wait to read another one of her books, so I bought myself a copy of Johnny Be Good. And guess what? It doesn't have a real ending! I was totally furious until I realized that three years after Johnny Be Good came out there was a sequel, Baby Be Mine. And I tell you, I was so glad I didn't have to wait three years to see what happened next. (I did however, have to wait for the book to be shipped...which was torture!)

In my normal life, I never like the bad boys. However in books I love them, and Johnny Jefferson is the ultimate bad boy. I also love reading about relationships that I cheer for, even though I think maybe they shouldn't work out. That is why I enjoyed these two books more than Chasing Daisy. There is nothing more perfect in the summer than getting lost in a Paige Toon book, and you can quote me on that. :)

YOU DON'T HAVE TO SAY YOU LOVE ME: SARRA MANNING

Since I loved Sarra Manning’s YA novel Let’s Get Lost, I didn’t waste much time getting me a copy of You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me to see how she writes for adults. This book is long, and I loved that getting lost in the length. I was able to enjoy the day to day events of Neve and they weren’t boring to me because I think Manning is a great writer. It reminded me of how I felt reading One Day by  David Nicholls (without the part that made me so mad I wanted to throw the book across the room), because I got such an intimate glimpse in a friendship and relationship.

This book has some saucy scenes. They are not written in “bodice ripping” style, but just a straight forward “this was how it was" way. And it might be too much for those who don't care for romance books, but I personally prefer the tell it like it is approach to the flowery fake one when it comes to love scenes.

I'VE GOT YOUR NUMBER: SOPHIE KINSELLA

Sophie Kinsella is kind of hit and miss with me, so I wasn't super on the case to read this right away. Honestly, I am not sure what made me decide to pick this up, but I am so glad I did. I loved it. I found myself giggling my way through it, and from the beginning there were moments my daughter asked: "What is so funny mom?" This book a typical romantic comedy WITHOUT being a typical romantic comedy. How did Kinsella do that? 

The plot is unique and has twists and turns that keep you frantically turning the pages. You can kind of hope you know where the story is going, but you are not sure. Also, there are no trashy obligatory love scenes, and the book is better for it. The whole thing reads like a movie, and I won't be shocked to see a movie version of this in theaters in a few years.

This kept me up late (easy), and woke me up early (not easy).

What ensues is a hilarious and unpredictable turn of events as Poppy and Sam increasingly upend each other's lives through emails and text messages. As Poppy juggles wedding preparations, mysterious phone calls and hiding her left hand from Magnus and his parents... she soon realises that she is in for the biggest surprise of her life.

At first I was worried that I might find Poppy as exasperating as the heroine in the Shopoholic books, but that was not the case. Check out more about this book HERE.

CHASING DAISY: PAIGE TOON

               

There a few books that I have had my eye on, but the only way for me to read them is to actually buy them from Amazon and have them shipped to me (often from the UK). I know a lot of people buy books that they haven't read yet, but I had to stop doing that because I was ending up with all these books that I didn't like that I had spent way too much money on. Chasing Daisy was one of the gambles that paid off, because I loved it.

This one took me a while to figure out where it was going and a while to get into the setting, but pretty soon I was sucked in. As the book goes on the story unfolds and it is full of genuine surprises. The only downside for me was that I wished that it had gone on longer (it is already a long book, why can't we have a couple more pages instead of an epilogue?) But don't let that discourage you. 

This book has a little language, but no graphic love scenes. This is full of complex realistic characters and great dialogue. All in all this is my kind of adult romance. Even though the characters are mid-20s and still WAY younger than me.

THE DIARY OF A CRUSH TRILOGY: SARRA MANNING

I have discovered another favorite author and I have been found drowning myself in her British tales for some time now. After reading and loving Sarra Mannings' Let's Get Lost, I dug up a copy of one of her adult novels (which I will review here soon) and realized that I freaking love the way she writes.

But today I am going to chat about the Diary of a Crush series which first started out as something she wrote for a magazine and then after the end of the magazine run they were published into books. All three of these were desperately hard for me to put down. Especially since it is in a diary format and I kept thinking: "I'll just read another entry." Then that entry would turn into another one, and another one, and another one. It got a little out of hand at times.

I think Manning's later stuff is more polished, but I'll tell you why these were so great to me. First of all I love Edie who is our voice for the three books. I love how she grows up and matures in the books. I love that she has the same weakness for moody art boys that I had when I was her age. I love all the kissing. I love the Britishisms that Edie uses in sassy ways to make me laugh. I love that this is a story about two people you cheer for, but aren't quite sure they are that good for each other either. 

Ok I am going to say it: I have a crush on these books.

LET'S GET LOST: SARRA MANNING

This is the first time I have ever loved such an unlikeable character. Isabel is a really mean and snarky girl as you begin this book and the only thing that kept me from still reading about her was that she was a very funny mean girl. As the reader, you know she is unhappy and as the book unfolds her layers are revealed in a very interesting way. This was one of the most realistic portrayals of a broken girl I have ever read, but it is not depressing because, like I said, Isabel is hilarious.Also the romance element of this story is real and sweet.

This takes place in the UK and it kind of fits the stereotype that I seem to have that kids there grow up faster (drinking, sex, drugs etc.) than they do in the US. Nothing overly explicit, but it is not a squeaky clean read.
