For this giveaway I happy to tell you that I am giving away a SIGNED copy of The Giver. Do you want it? I waited in line a long time for it...;)
Lois Lowry was in Provo, Utah this past fall promoting the next book in The Giver series. She shared that the books became a series because people kept asking questions about certain characters in the books and the stories just came to her.
One thing that she mentioned that I was glad to have cleared up is that The Giver is not meant to be sharing a particular message or agenda. Lowry said that your own personal belief system will mold this book to what YOU as a reader sees in it, not what she as an author was trying to say. I really loved that since I feel like too many books are about an author's agenda and aren't about just telling a story and letting you decide what it means. That is so very opposite to how we were taught to read literature in school isn't it? We were always so busy having to dissect what an author was trying to say that we couldn't just enjoy the darn books. Because of this, I didn't read until I was 15 years out of school, it is a shame really.
Anyway Lois Lowry is an icon, and I am happy to give away a book she touched with her very own hands.

I am really happy she decided to write more books in this series, I was one of those people with questions after reading The Giver. I wanted to know more.

I was at NCTE two years ago when Lois Lowry was there. My friend bumped into her, and started talking all about books, even mentioning The Giver. Needless to say she had no clue who she was talking to (that happens sometimes with authors). But I had just come up to find her when Lois said her goodbyes. I ran up to my friend, yelling if she knew who she was just talking to. She replied no, and when I told her Lois Lowry, she did a little scream of embarrassment and excitement. It was the funniest thing ever. The rest of the conference, she couldn't shut up about it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great giveaway! I remember reading Lois Lowry's books when I was younger but I haven't read any in a while. Thanks for the recommendation.

I still have a Christmas tree in my living room, my husband hasn't taken it out yet. It has no ornaments except a solitary angel on top that I can't reach, and it loses needles every time you walk by it. :)

ReplyDeleteSomething interesting? I don't know if it's interesting, but by the time I was 25 years old I had to have 2 spinal fusions (TERRIBLE surgeries) because of problems with my spinal cord usually after car accident or sports injury, and I never even injured myself. Plus 4 herniated discs in my L and T spine and a spondylolisthesis at L3-l4. As my neurosurgeon says, I just have awful luck.
